APRIL 2004 NEWS
Perfect Weather for the April G.C.R. Shoot
Saturday April 17 th dawned at a nice 48 degrees by 8:30am it had warmed up to 60 degrees. We had a special 97 shotgun side match set up at the top of the hill. This challenging side match had you starting with a Winchester or Norinco 97 stoked with 5 rounds in the magazine. At the beepyou shot a knockdown shotgun popper directly in front of you then you pivoted to your left squatted and shot a round 8 inch plate through a 12 inch plastic pipe 4 feet long. If you hit the plate you activated a rail car that held 3 steel rebar holders with clay pigeons rolling down the track. You had to run 14 feet past a wall to engage the clay pigeons on the moving rail car. We had eight people shoot this side match. Finishing first was Ottway Smith with a time of 7.09 seconds, second was Mort Dooley with 7.56 seconds, third was Hi-Wall Johnson with 7.90 seconds, and Forth was Tennessee Deadeye with 8.20 seconds. Hi-Wall had rounded up prizes for the top three finishers and we raised $48.00 for our Texas Star Target Fund.
By 10:30 it had warmed up to 72 degrees and 24 shooters started shooting 5 stages written by Ringer. The weather was perfect even when it reached 81 degrees in the afternoon we still had a nice breeze.
When the dust cleared Lickcreek Kid was first, Mort Dooley who had a fire lit under him was second, Tennessee Deadeye was third, Hogleg Horn was forth, Ottway Smith was fifth and our top duelist, and Hi-Wall Johnson was sixth and second as duelist. Sheez Packin was our top lady shooter, and Honeysuckle Sue was second in ladies.
